THE BARBADOS WORKERS’ UNION (BWU) is worried about the escalating violence being acted out across the island and is calling on government to put a plan in place to deal with the situation.
The BWU’s executive council wants “a speedy and purposive action” by the state aimed at diagnosing the problems and to find workable corrective action to the behaviour that had a potential to create disorder and undermine Barbados’ stability and development.
The council is also appealing to the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports, ministries of education and community development to initiate national dialogue in conjunction with the judiciary, the Royal Barbados Police Force, the Church, parent-teacher associations, guidance counsellors and the University of the West Indies to address the development.
The BWU, in a release, suggested underlying weaknesses in parenting styles that added to the environmental influences, “such as the move away by some families from the spiritual influence of the church, the putrid influences of the mass media, and particularly the unbridled social media, as well as the narcoticsand gun culture”.
