LEIGH SANDIFORD and Jaydn Gill emerged champions of the Barbados Chess Federation’s national Under-12 and Under-10 championships at the St Michael School on Saturday.
Sandiford retained the Under-12 title by sweeping to six successive victories to end the championships with a 100 per cent winning record.
Gill, last year’s Under-8 champion, narrowly clinched the Under-10 division on a tiebreaker after finishing level on five and a half points with Dominic Jackman.
Contested over two weekends, the championships attracted 44 players in the two divisions and were keenly contested with both titles being decided in the sixth and final round of games.
Sandiford, a student of Providence Elementary, won a top-of-the-table clash against American Zachary Mastrosimone in the fourth round to move into the lead and never looked back. (HG)
