STUDENTS and teachers at Welches Primary School will have to wait until tomorrow or perhaps Tuesday to see if defending champions Yellow House retain their title and bragging rights for another year.
When rain interrupted their annual inter-house athletics meet on Friday at Bagatelle Playing Field in St Thomas, all of the events were not completed. Physical education teacher and coach Rodney Forde told SUNSPORT that the long jumps and throwing events, such as the cricket ball throw, would be done tomorrow.
After that, the final tally would be made to determine the winners.
Earlier, there was plenty of action from the youngsters while the rain was holding up, as the field was not waterlogged.
Names such as Davina Gaskin, Jaheim Phillips, Shaquan Walkes, Shalon Grimes, Shadea Grazette, Rebecca Bailey, Lawshawna Archer, Kjana Agard, Kemar Dixon and Jaydon Marshall, Kyree Lopez, Sy-ann Goddard, Katlyn Holder and Akiel Maynard were heard constantly throughout the day as they secured podium places.
At 2:50 p.m. just before the relays got going, Yellow House were in front with 268.5 points, followed by Green (225) and Red (199.5).
All the relays were exhilarating and the rivalry among the athletes was intense.
Three of the most exciting relays came in the Under 9 Girls, with Katlyn Holder anchoring Red House to victory; the Under-9 Boys, with Red House anchorman Jayden Marshall blowing away Kemar Dixon of Green and Akiel Maynard of Yellow, and in the Under-13 Boys’ with Yellow House’s Jaheim Phillips dominating Green’s Kevon Harewood and Red’s Shaquan Walkes on the final leg.
