A STRING of Olympians, two former Cabinet ministers and three paralympians led a wave of athletes, racing with national pride in their hearts and the Broken Tridents in their hands, through the streets of Bridgetown en route to St George, on Errol Barrow Day, yesterday.
Under the theme of From Legends To Legacy, the best of the best in local sport, representing past and present generations, completed the Trident Run, one of the iconic events marking this country’s 50th anniversary celebrations.
Nearly 200 athletes ranging from swimmers and volleyball players, to hockey players and surfers, ran with the commemorative Broken Trident along the 13.6-kilometre route, handing it over at intervals.
St George residents delighted at being the first of the 11 parishes that will be featured in the historic Independence celebrations, seized every vantage point along Charles Rowe Bridge and Glebe as the runners reached the final stretch of the route that began in Independence Square.
