BARBADIAN CHELSEA TUACH has been named Surfer of the Year by Eastern Surf Magazine, the first time ever a female has taken the award.

It is not doubt one of many awards for Tuach who had a very impressive season to put her name in the conversation for National Sports Personality 2015.

Here is that the editors at the magazine wrote in making Tuach their pick:

“We could write a book about the dominance displayed by Barbados 20-year-old Chelsea Tuach in 2015. But that’s coming in our January 2016 issue, so we’ll leave the deep dive for next week, when the new mag hits surf shops.”

They went on to list her achievement, which included a win at the WSL Pro Junior event at her Soup Bowl homebreak and a QS6000 in Spain; reaching the semi-finals at three events and the quarter-finals in three. She also got two wildcards into events in California and France.

“In short, Chelsea dominated an overwhelming majority of her heats, on four different continents, in a wide range of contests and conditions, ending up with a spot among the 17 women on the 2016 World Tour. That makes her a landslide pick for our 2015 Surfer of the Year, with no one – not Kelly Slater, not CJ Hobgood, nor any other male hotshot – even coming close.”

They concluded:

“How big a deal is it that this is the first time a female surfer has won the Surfer of the Year ESeMMY in the 14-year history of these awards? Almost as big as the fact that Chelsea Tuach is the first Caribbean surfer to ever qualify for the Dream Tour. And it’s no surprise that nearly everyone thinks this competitive ace has a real shot at Rookie of the Year. Chances are this is the first of many ESeMMY Awards still to come.” (SAT/ESM)
