Inniss: Take ‘liquor’ off court’s hands

BARBADOS needs to step into the 21st century and stop issuing liquor licences through the magistrates’ courts.

This was the response of “embarrassed” Minister of Commerce Donville Inniss to Tuesday’s Daily Nation news report that more than 300 businesspeople had visited the court in one day to apply for liquor licences.

They included representatives from hotels, wholesale operations and rum shops who converged on the District “A” Magistrates’ Traffic Court on “call day”, and Inniss described the procedure as an “embarrassment”.

“I am actually very embarrassed to know that in the 21st century we still have to have people leave their place of employment to go and stand up in the courtyard to apply for a renewable liquor licence,” he said.
