Late reports ‘a grey area’

THE FINANCIAL STATEMENTS presented over the last few years do not fairly represent the financial position of the Government.

Auditor General Leigh Trotman made that startling pronouncement Wednesday night as he spoke of problems that have hampered the work of his office.

At least one state agency had not presented financial statements for up to ten years, he revealed.

The reasons given for their delinquency were insufficient staffing and lack of funding to pay auditors, among other problems.

“The auditor carries out his examination into the accounts of Government – that is, the financial statements produced by the Treasury – in order to form an opinion of the fairness of these figures,” Trotman noted. (WILLCOMM)
