SPECTATORS at the David Thompson Memorial Constituency Councils Football Classic need not worry about their safety.
Downplaying concerns arising out of last Friday night’s premature end to the match between St Michael South and City of Bridgetown at Bayville, tournament coordinator Hamilton Lashley made it clear yesterday that the early finish had nothing to do with unruly fans.
In contrast, Lashley, Government’s adviser on social policy, praised the spectators for their exemplary conduct throughout the previous four years of the tournament, which features teams from the 30 constituencies across Barbados.
Explaining the turn of events that led to the abandonment of the game with 14 minutes remaining, Lashley said some players from one of the teams openly showed their dissent to the referee’s decision and some fans, fearing for the safety of the official, went onto the field. (HG)
