Jones: No leak

THE “NOXIOUS” SMELL, which forced the early closure of the Combermere School yesterday, was not related to the previous issues that forced the temporary relocation of the school last term.

That is the word from Minister of Education Ronald Jones, who insisted that the odour which caused students to fall ill yesterday was a “peculiarity”.

Jones said the earlier suspicion of a gas leak was ruled out after workers from the National Petroleum Corporation (NPC) went to the Waterford, St Michael campus and did their checks.

The problem was later traced to a nearby area on Waterford Road, which was being debushed. Jones explained that there is a particular tree which gives off a gas-like smell when it is bruised or cut.
