BREAST CANCER remains the most commonly diagnosed cancer in Barbadian women.
So said medical coordinator of the Breast Screening Programme, Dr Shirley Hanoman-Jhagroo, during the launch of the National Walk for Breast Awarness “Think Pink” at Bougainvillea Beach Resort, Christ Church, yesterday.
She said that breast cancer was the No. 1 cause of death and this corresponds with global findings.
“The incidence rates have been increasing, [but] the mortality rate has remained the same,” she said,.
These findings were based on a number of factors: routine screening which helps with an early diagnosis, greater awareness of the disease by Barbadians, increased efforts in research into the disease and improved treatment”.
Hanoman-Jhagroo also said there had been an increase in the number of patients attending the Early Detection Clinic over the years and that the money raised will go towards the cost of mammogram, biopsies and maintenance of equipment a cost of about $120 000 annually. (RB)
