St Lucy quarry change of heart

RESIDENTS OF BROMEFIELD, St Lucy who are gearing up to do battle with their neighbour Arawak Cement Company over plans for a new marl quarry less than 50 metres upwind from some homes, may not have to go to war after all.

Since the Weekend Nation published a story of their plight last Friday, residents reported being visited by officials from the cement company as well as representatives of both the ruling Democratic Labour Party and the Opposition Barbados Labour Party.

The residents who complained about being inundated by dust since a contractor for Arawak started clearing the four-acre lot on June 9, pointed out that the equipment operators had confirmed they were removing the top soil to expose the rock to begin quarrying.

Among those complaining was 85-year-old asthmatic Pearl Jackman, a resident of the district since 1947.  (RRM)
