Diddy hits out at ‘shameful’ and ‘illegal’ documentary

0

Lawyers for Sean “Diddy” Combs have hit out at a new Netflix documentary produced by rapper 50 Cent, which they say is “a shameful hit piece” that “relied on stolen footage”.

The four-part documentary, titled Sean Combs: The Reckoning, was released on Tuesday and is billed as a “staggering examination” of the hip-hop mogul, who was convicted on prostitution-related charges earlier this year.

It includes what Netflix described as “explosive” footage of Combs filmed in the days before his arrest, including a phone conversation with his lawyers.

The director said she obtained the footage legally, but Combs’ spokesman said it was “fundamentally unfair, and illegal” to use his private footage.

He also said it was “staggering” that Netflix had given creative control to 50 Cent, who he described as “a longtime adversary with a personal vendetta”.

“Netflix is plainly desperate to sensationalise every minute of Mr Combs’s life, without regard for truth, in order to capitalise on a never-ending media frenzy,” the statement said.

“If Netflix cared about truth or about Mr Combs’s legal rights, it would not be ripping private footage out of context – including conversations with his lawyers that were never intended for public viewing. No rights in that material were ever transferred to Netflix or any third party.”

The statement added: “For Netflix to give his life story to someone who has publicly attacked him for decades feels like an unnecessary and deeply personal affront. At minimum, he expected fairness from people he respected.”

The documentary opens with footage of Combs in a hotel room six days before arrest in September 2024, talking on the phone to attorney Marc Agnifilo and telling him he wants to “fight for my life”.

Pushing Agnifilo to have a more upfront media strategy to protest his innocence, Combs told him: “We have to find somebody that’ll work with us. It has to be somebody that has dealt in the dirtiest of dirtiest of dirty business of [the] media and propaganda.”

At another point, viewers see Combs talking to his son Justin on the phone five days before his arrest. “God told me to do nothing… [but] other people need to do something ’cause this is ridiculous,” he said in the clip.

Combs’ spokesman said the documentary contained footage that was “never authorised for release”.

“As Netflix and CEO Ted Sarandos know, Mr Combs has been amassing footage since he was 19 to tell his own story, in his own way. It is fundamentally unfair, and illegal, for Netflix to misappropriate that work.”

Netflix has not responded to a request for a response but pointed US media to comments it has published from the documentary’s director Alexandria Stapleton.

“It came to us, we obtained the footage legally and have the necessary rights,” she said. “We moved heaven and earth to keep the film-maker’s identity confidential.”

The documentary is executive produced by Curtis “50 Cent” Jackson, whose long-running feud with Combs stretches back two decades.

Jackson told ABC News’ Good Morning America on Monday: “If I didn’t say anything, you would interpret it as that hip-hop is fine with his behaviours. There’s no-one else being vocal.”

The documentary covers Combs’ career as one of the most powerful men in hip-hop, and includes allegations that he was involved in the murder of rapper Tupac Shakur in 1996.

It features tapes of a police interview in which former gang member Duane “Keffe D” Davis claims that Combs offered him $1m (£769,000) for a hit on Shakur.

Mr Davis is set to stand trial for Shakur’s murder in 2026. He now says his proffer agreement with police, under which he agreed to tell them what he knew but it couldn’t be used against him in court, was given under duress, according to Netflix.

The programme also includes Kirk Burrowes, who co-founded Bad Boy Entertainment with Combs, claiming that he believes Combs “had a lot to do with the death of Tupac”.

Combs has always denied any involvement in Shakur’s death.

The documentary also features further claims of violence and threats, many of which have previously been made public in dozens of lawsuits, including alleged abuse against former girlfriend Cassie, which ended in a settlement.

Combs has previously denied the complaints, calling them “sickening” and “full of lies”.

In a media statement earlier this year, his lawyers said “anyone can file a lawsuit”, adding: “No matter how many lawsuits are filed it won’t change the fact that Mr Combs has never sexually assaulted or sex trafficked anyone – man or woman, adult or minor.”

The documentary also includes interviews with two jurors from Combs’ trial.

In July, he was convicted on two charges of transportation to engage in prostitution but found not guilty of the most serious charges – racketeering conspiracy and sex trafficking of two ex-girlfriends.

He is now serving a 50-month prison sentence and has said he will appeal. (BBC News)

Sutherland, BLP dismiss ‘malicious’ letter

0

Both the Barbados Labour Party (BLP) and Member of Parliament Dwight Sutherland have dismissed as “malicious” a letter purporting to be calling for him to be removed from the St George South constituency.

The “urgent plea for intervention and restoration of integrity in St George South” was addressed to the former President of Barbados The Most Honourale Dame Sandra Mason, Prime Minister Mia Amor Mottley and BLP general secretary The Most Honourable Senator Jerome Walcott, and supposedly sent from the constituency and “the diaspora”, with the author(s) claiming to be spokesperson for deeply concerned, law-abiding citizens in the constituency.

However, the BLP said “no such correspondence has been received by the Prime Minister or the general secretary” in relation to the anonymous document circulating on social media.

“The content of the letter is absolute rubbish, and it is a scurrilous and unwarranted attack on Mr Dwight Sutherland, a long-standing member of the BLP, and a valued parliamentary representative.

“It is to be expected that more documents such as this, penned by anonymous persons, will be circulated.

Barbadians should expect much more fake news in the near future,” stated yesterday’s BLP release signed by Walcott.

Sutherland, who was found in his constituency yesterday evening attending an activity at Melverton Christian Mission, told the Daily Nation he left the matter in the hands of the BLP executive to respond and “that it is malicious news”.

When asked about being a candidate whenever the next General Election is called, he said he would be running.

“Yes, of course, persons have been asking if I would be running and I said I would be running again and again and again, so that’s no question. That’s all I have to say and the party would deal with the malicious news,” he added.

The letter said the situation in the constituency had escalated beyond mere political disagreement into a crisis of confidence that “comprises the safety and integrity of our community”.

It added in part: “We respectfully and urgently petition your offices to facilitate the immediate resignation of Dr Dwight Sutherland as representative for St George South. Furthermore, we implore the Barbados Labour Party to revoke his candidacy, ensuring he cannot stand [for] future public office under its banner.” (AC)

Wales crush Kickstart 8–3 to win Prime Minister’s Cup

0

The Weymouth Wales dynasty was in full effect on Monday night, when the newly crowned kings of the Prime Minister’s Cup stormed to an emphatic 8-3 victory in the final against Kickstart Rush.

Played under lights at Kensington Oval, Wales, the heart and soul of Carrington Village, delivered one of the most dominant finals performances ever seen in local football history, sealing the coveted trophy and the $100 000 grand prize in ruthless fashion.

Driven by a magnificent hat-trick from tournament Most Valuable Player and Best Defender André Applewhaite, Wales looked unstoppable from start to finish. They wasted no time stamping their authority, with midfielder Jaheim Neblett stunning Kickstart by firing home the opening goal inside the very first minute. Neblett later completed a well-deserved brace in the second half, further widening the gap as Wales’ attack ran riot.

Champion coach Asquith Howell watched as his side executed with venom, precision, and flair in the scoring third. Wales added three more goals through Romario Harewood, Armando “Suga” Lashley, and a deflected own goal that summed up Kickstart’s difficult night.

Despite the tough start, Kickstart, guided by Technical Director Renaldo “PeeWee” Gilkes still managed to take away a cheque of $25 000, as they showed heart and courage, pulling three goals back via Diquan Adamson, Tekyle Alleyne and Demar Linton.

However, nothing could derail the Wales juggernaut from signing off the year unbeaten in local football. (ML)

Residents shocked by shooting of teens

0

The Vauxhall, Christ Church community was left in shock after an unknown gunman opened fire on a group of teenagers last Saturday night, injuring two boys.

Police said the children were outside a residence around 8:20 p.m. when an individual approached and discharged several gunshots. The two teens were transported by private vehicle to hospital.

Yesterday, the mother of a 14-year-old victim declined to speak, but the grandmother of the other, a 15-year-old, said it was a terrible feeling to have him injured in such a manner.

“All now, my heart pumping fast,” she said.

The woman, who did not want to be identified, said her grandson, a student of St Leonard’s Boys’ School, was shot in the right foot and now has to use a cane to walk, with the bullet still lodged in his foot.

“He’s not talking much; I think he’s traumatised.”

She told the Daily Nation youth in the area gathered at the same spot regularly, just a stone’s throw away from her house. She said she heard the shots but did not realise how close they were.

“A neighbour called me and told me what happened; I still can’t believe it,” she said.

The boy’s father, who too declined to be named, said they were not certain if his son would need surgery.

“He ain’t too bad right now, but this will set back his studies. Years ago, they had trouble like that here, but now it is a peaceful place. I’m surprised to see this happen now,” he said.

The upset man said he heard the shots and was not far away when the incident occurred, but as he was trying to determine where they could have come from, he received a call saying his son had been shot.

A neighbour said it was a “very scary” situation, especially as it involved teenagers.

“I heard the shots and then saw everybody trying to run. They were just little children sitting down talking, then ‘pew, pew, pew’. Honestly, I feel sorry for the youth, but I suppose it could have been worse,” she said.

Another neighbour said she too felt for the youngsters but still felt safe at home.

“I live here and I will always live here. Shootings happen all around. Just ’cause something like that happen, it won’t make me run away. Nobody can feel good that children get shoot, but I still feel safe at home.”

Police are appealing to anyone with information on the incident to contact the Crime Stoppers Hotline at 1-800-8477, police emergency 211 or Oistins Police Station at 418-2604 or 418-2612. (CA)

“The Mood is Red” in St Lucia

0

They forgot to inform the voters in St. Lucia that the code is yellow in the Caribbean, and so on Monday the “Mood is Red” prevailed as the St. Lucia Labour Party (SLP) won a convincing second consecutive term in office.

Supporters  of the SLP had long indicated that they would ensure that the sweep by political parties using the phrase “yellow is the colour”  such as in Trinidad and Tobago, and more recently, St. Vincent and the Grenadines, would not be replicated here.

“First of all I would like to thank the people of St.  Lucia for conducting what was a very decent election, an election free from violence and this is testimony of the maturity of  our people and the maturity of our democracy.

“I want to  thank the members of the St. Lucia Labour Party, the executive,  the  cabinet, the men and women in the constituency groups , who worked hard, who worked tirelessly that this victory happened,” a jubilant Prime Minister Phillip J Pierre told supporters after the preliminary results show that the party is on course to better the 13-2 victory it recorded in the 2021 general election. Walters: Our right to see power deal

0

Barbadians must be able to examine the arrangement between Government and the Barbados Light & Power Co. Ltd. (BL&P), says Opposition Senator Ryan Walters.

Reacting to a report in the last SATURDAY SUN headlined Powering Up, on the new licensing agreement between Government and BL&P that would “benefit Barbadians”, he questioned how that could be the case.

“Barbadians cannot benefit from arrangements they are not allowed to see, understand or question. This is exactly the problem with what took place a couple days ago: a major, long-term agreement was signed, supposedly on behalf of every electricity user in Barbados, yet not a single detail has been disclosed,” he said in a media statement.

Questioned

Walters also questioned the transparency often touted by Government and the public consultation “they constantly boast about”.

“Where is the explanation to households and small businesses, who bear the cost of every energy decision, about how this deal affects their electricity bills for the next 20 to 30 years?

“We have none! Instead, what we are hearing from the minister of energy is far from reassuring. There was no commitment to lowering bills, stabilising rates or protecting the majority of consumers,” he stated.

Instead, said the Democratic Labour Party spokesman on energy, there was excitement about hundreds of millions of dollars in new investment that will only benefit a small class of wealthy investors whose projects “were encouraged prematurely and are now stuck, unprofitable and waiting for Government to rescue them”.

The Government, he added, seemed more focused on appeasing investors with stalled renewable energy projects than on safeguarding the pockets of Barbadians.

Minister of Energy Senator Lisa Cummins had stated: “I think that all of Barbados knows that the grid in the country has had what we have been describing as gridlock. We have a number of projects that have been awaiting connection to the grid [but] it is important for projects to not just have connections to the grid, but to have signed power purchase agreements that establish the relationship between independent power producers as part of the democratisation of the energy process and the offtaker, namely [BL&P].

Licences

“We have completed negotiation of the licences for the operations of [BL&P] in Barbados. It allows for those power purchase agreements to be signed because there is clarity and there’s predictability in the relationship between the utility and the Government of Barbados,” she added last Friday during the signing ceremony at the Warrens Office Complex, St Michael.

Walters stated that the minister pointed out that the new framework cleared the way for more than $500 million in renewable energy investments, but said nothing about what it meant for the cost of electricity.

“Not one word about whether this deal will stabilise or reduce bills. Not one word about whether ratepayers will now be forced to subsidise decades of guaranteed profits for private energy producers.

“The minister has seemingly forgotten that service in public life is to the people and not just a subset of the people,” the senator said.

He said Barbadians deserved to know, among other things, the exact obligations to which the Government has committed; whether the new licensing arrangement will lead to higher rates, new fees, or additional surcharges; the protections for households and small businesses, and why the deal was concluded without public disclosure.

Walters challenged the minister to give answers instead of focusing on gridlock or investor “certainty”.

“Barbadians cannot be asked to shoulder higher bills so that wealthy investors who were encouraged into the renewable sector prematurely can now get guaranteed access, guaranteed returns and guaranteed profits.” (AC)
