Trump fires Pam Bondi as US attorney general

0

WASHINGTON – US President Donald Trump ousted Attorney General Pam Bondi on Thursday after mounting frustration with her performance, especially over the release of files on late sex offender Jeffrey Epstein.

Trump also felt Bondi was not moving quickly enough to prosecute critics and adversaries whom he wanted to face criminal charges, according to sources.

Deputy Attorney General Todd ‌Blanche, a former personal lawyer to Trump, will lead the Justice Department temporarily, Trump said in a social media post.

In the post, Trump praised Bondi as a “Great American Patriot and a loyal friend” who had overseen a “massive crackdown in Crime”. Trump said she will soon move to a job in the private sector, but he gave no details.

In her own social media post, Bondi said: “Leading President Trump’s historic and highly successful efforts to make America safer and more secure has been the honour of a lifetime.”

She said she would spend the next month transitioning the role to Blanche. On social media, Blanche thanked Trump and praised Bondi, promising to do “everything in our power to keep America safe.”

During her tenure as the top US law enforcement official, Bondi was a combative champion of Trump’s agenda and dismantled the Justice Department’s longstanding tradition of independence from the White House in its investigations.

But it was repeated criticism over the Epstein files, including from Trump allies and some Republican lawmakers, that came to dominate her tenure. Bondi was accused of covering up or mismanaging the release of records on the DOJ’s sex-trafficking investigations into Epstein, a financier
who cultivated ties to wealthy and powerful figures.

Trump informed Bondi at a White House meeting on Wednesday that he was looking to replace her as attorney general, according to a source familiar with the matter. Trump allies had encouraged the president in recent days to “rip off the Band-Aid” and fire her, according to the source and one other person familiar with the matter.

Trump told Bondi multiple times over the past several months that he was unhappy with her performance, a senior White House official told Reuters. The official said Trump has contemplated replacing her with Lee Zeldin, the administrator of the Environmental Protection Agency, but has also discussed other candidates.

Bondi spent much of Wednesday with Trump, riding with him to the US Supreme Court in the morning, attending an Easter lunch where he spoke and later watching his address to the nation on the Iran war. At the Supreme Court, Trump observed as one of Bondi’s top officials, Solicitor General D. John Sauer, was grilled by justices about the administration’s attempt to limit birthright citizenship. Coach Hill folk on edge after attacks

0

Residents of Coach Hill, St John, are calling for urgent intervention as fear spreads throughout the district following a series of destructive incidents allegedly carried out by a mentally-ill man known to the area.

Tensions escalated on Tuesday after the individual reportedly went on a rampage, throwing rocks at passing vehicles and smashing windows in the early hours of the morning. Several residents said the attacks have left them shaken and increasingly concerned about their safety.

One resident, Nin Sobers, recounted how her red SUV, purchased just in January, was damaged when a rock was hurled at it shortly after 2 a.m.

According to Sobers, the man did not stop there. After damaging the vehicle, he reportedly moved to the side of her apartment, where occupants inside noticed his presence.

“The lights came on and he ran off,” she said, explaining that the sudden brightness appeared to scare him away.

Security footage from the property allegedly captured the man holding what appeared to be an accelerant, raising further alarm among residents who now fear the situation could escalate beyond property damage.

Sobers said officers from the Barbados Police Service responded and attempted to apprehend the suspect, tracking him into a nearby bushy area a short distance from his residence.

“When they went, they saw him and he ran off. They went behind him and there is a drop off like a cliff and he jumped down there and escaped,” she said.

Residents say the man is well known within the community and that Tuesday’s events are part of a troubling pattern spanning more than a decade.

Sobers’ partner described what he called a “repeated cycle”, where the individual is arrested, institutionalised and later released, only for disruptive behaviour to resume.

“It’s been going on for over ten years,” he said, expressing frustration at what residents view as a lack of a long-term solution.

Other residents reported additional acts of vandalism earlier that same morning, including slashed water pipes and damage to windows and vehicles across the neighbourhood. The incidents have intensified calls for authorities to act decisively.

In a statement, the Barbados Police Service confirmed that efforts to capture the suspect have so far been unsuccessful, noting that he has repeatedly evaded officers by fleeing into nearby overgrown areas.

Residents have been urged to remain vigilant, report any sightings immediately and avoid approaching the individual.

Man hurt in Long Gap shooting

0

A man was undergoing treatment at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital (QEH) after being shot at Long Gap, St Michael, early this morning.

Police say two men were walking along the road, when they were approached by a group of people clad in dark clothing, wearing masks and brandishing a firearm.

They allegedly demanded valuables from the two men and discharged a gunshot, injuring one of them. He was transported to the QEH by private vehicle.

Police Operations Control received a report around 3:45 a.m.

One resident who didn’t want to be named, said she was asleep and heard a bang just after 3 a.m. Her dog soon began to bark furiously and she thought the noise was from a big truck in the area, making its usual commute around that time. The woman said she went back to sleep and awoke after 6 a.m. to find police stationed at the bottom of the gap.

Investigations are continuing and anyone who may have witnessed this incident or has any information that may assist, is asked to contact the Crime Stoppers Hotline at 1800-8477, Police Emergency at 211 or the District ‘A’ Police Station at 430-7242 or 430-7270. (Nation News Desk)

Hands up for Grenada invasion

Barbados experienced the best kind of “Grenada invasion” on Sunday night when several artistes from the Spice Isle touched down at Rum Punch.

Just as a general orchestrates chaos, the “Greenz” entertainers, with help from their Bajan comrades, delivered explosive performances at Kensington Oval during the post-Carnival event.

V’ghn was among the entertainers who had the large, boisterous crowd singing along and chanting to Trouble in the Morning, Explore, Finally, and the juggernaut hit Jab Decisions.

V’ghn also got up close with fans, recording his own video with them while he was on stage. As he stood with a microphone in one hand and a phone in the other, the crowd was amused.

He even paid tribute to the late Trinidadian entertainer Blaxx by performing Leh Go and Gyal Owner which he wrote.

During Vghn’s performance, he introduced Bajan entertainer Jordan English, who caused even more eruption when he performed Weatherman 3Style.

English stepped out in a bright yellow raincoat, proving he was ready for the stage regardless of the elements. Although the song was only released about a month ago, the lyrics echoed across the venue as the crowd sang along.

From the moment Grenadian Muddy appeared on stage, backpack in tow, both he and the audience were ready for action.

It was as if he had them all on Payroll – because they sang the hit word-for-word.

Muddy then jumped off the stage and parted the sea of soca lovers and their large flags, moving through the crowd with great energy and enthusiasm.

Quon and Doejay served up their 2025 Crop Over hit Bartender like master mixologists, stirring the crowd into a frenzy. The event was hosted by DJ Gunner and featured performances from deejays

Jesse T, Raw Gas, DJ Ras, Big Mike & Evolution and the Legacy Team, who also played well.

If this night was any indication of what the upcoming Crop Over season and events like Rum Punch Crop Over August 2 have in store, it’s clear fans are in for an unforgettable summer. (TG)

Barbados wants stronger WTO

Barbados needs the World Trade Organisation (WTO) and is committed to “working constructively” with all of the institution’s members to strengthen it.

Senior Minister of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade Senator Christopher Sinckler said that “access to a predictable rules-based multilateral trading system is vital not only for our economic survival but also for our food security and broader developmental goals”.

He was delivering Barbados’ statement to the WTO’s 14th Ministerial Conference, which started on Wednesday and was scheduled to conclude in Yaounde, Cameroon, recently.

Sinckler, who led this country’s delegation to MC14, told delegates that “Barbados, as a small island developing state and a small and vulnerable economy, has long valued the multilateral trading system and the work of the WTO”.

“For economies like ours, the WTO remains a cornerstone of our economic security and sustainable development,” he said.

“Barbados reaffirms its commitment to working constructively with all WTO Members to strengthen the institution.

“Let us use this Ministerial Conference to reaffirm our collective commitment to multilateralism and to ensure that global trade works for all – especially the small and vulnerable economies that depend on it most.”

The minister said MC14 took place “at a very crucial time” for global trade.

“The very foundations of the multilateral trading system have been shaken. Heightened geopolitical tensions, rising trade barriers and ongoing supply chain disruptions, and the climate crisis continue to impact small, open economies the greatest,” he stated.

“We are at an inflection point and it is important we commit to a WTO reform agenda that values consensus decision making, sustainable development and treaty bound right of special and differential treatment, especially for the most vulnerable.”

Sinckler highlighted the climate crisis, which “remains one of the most significant threats to our economic resilience”, as an issue pertinent to the WTO’s mission.

“Extreme weather events can wipe away years of development progress in a single season, infrastructure These risk marginalising if left “The to discuss and the transparency promote “The is no can discuss rules season, disrupt trade flows, and damage the infrastructure essential to our export sectors.

These challenges exacerbate trade costs and marginalising small developing economies left unaddressed,” he said.

The WTO is an appropriate place for us discuss the links between trade, climate the environment including around transparency of border measures that seek to promote sustainability.

The WTO must be safeguarded. There other platform where 166 members discuss trade issues, negotiate trade or engage in a discourse on the issues of our time.”

He said the WTO was also about development and applauded the organisation’s “ongoing work on trade and development, including Aid for Trade initiatives, technical assistance and capacity building, the Small Economies Work Programme, the Work Programme on Electronic Commerce, and other development-focused discussions”.

“We also welcome other important initiatives such as, but not limited to, the Trade in Services for Development Initiative, Development week, and the Trade and Environment Week. These are crucial in order to maximise the capacity of developing countries to further integrate into the multilateral trading system,” Sinckler said.

“We also emphasize the importance of advancing negotiations on agriculture and fisheries subsidies, particularly through the Fish II negotiations and the support of the Fish Fund.

“Barbados supports rules that discipline harmful subsidies while ensuring support for our artisanal fisher folk through appropriate Special and Differential Treatment measures.”

The Senior Minister said Barbados’ position was that “every member of the WTO can play a leading role in the Organisation”, using his homeland as an example.

“To this end, my country leads the Informal Working Group on MSMEs, co-coordinates the Dialogue on Plastics Pollution and Environmentally Sustainable Plastics Trade, and chairs the Working Party on the Accession of Curaçao to the World Trade Organisation,” he reminded.

“Barbados also participates in the Working Group on Trade and Gender, Trade and Environmental Sustainability Structured Discussions and supports the incorporation of the Investment Facilitation for Development Agreement into the WTO rule book.

“In October 2025, Barbados participated in its first meeting of the WTO Committee on Government Procurement as an observer and has become a recent member of the Advisory Centre on WTO Law showing our commitment to a rules based system with a working dispute settlement architecture.”

Sinckler also said that Barbados “has had the privilege of coordinating the activities of the African, Caribbean and Pacific Group (ACP) in Geneva since September 2024”.

“I am pleased that the Group continues to maintain active participation in the negotiations at the WTO.

“In addition to the ambitious Ministerial Declaration of the ACP Group on the occasion of MC14, written proposals were made in the area of WTO reform and electronic commerce among others,” he added

UK funeral director admits to misconduct

0

A funeral director has admitted preventing the burials of 30 bodies and stealing donations made to charities by mourners.

Robert Bush, 48, was arrested after police investigated Hull-based Legacy Independent Funeral Directors following a report of “concern for care of the deceased” in March 2024.

Bush, formerly of East Yorkshire and now living in West Yorkshire, pleaded guilty at Hull Crown Court to 30 counts of preventing a lawful and decent burial, and one of theft from 12 charities including the Salvation Army and Macmillan Cancer Support.

He previously admitted presenting families with the ashes of strangers and fraudulently selling funeral plans. He will be sentenced on July 27.

Judge Justice Hilliard told the court a “custodial sentence is inevitable in this case” before releasing him on bail.

Bush was charged after a major investigation into human remains found at the premises, including four babies lost in pregnancy.

Humberside Police said all the charges dated from a period between May 2012 and March 6, 2024.

In court, the clerk spent ten minutes reading out 31 charges.

Bush – who was wearing a dark grey suit, white shirt and mauve tie – showed no emotion as he entered his pleas while standing in the glass-fronted dock.

His left hand was gripping his right, and his voice was quiet as he replied “guilty” to each charge.

About a dozen relatives of the victims were in the public gallery.

Prosecutor Chris Paxton KC told the court there would be up to 240 victim impact statements from people that had been affected by the case. These would be provided before the sentencing hearing.

“The fraudulent trading relates to funeral plans involving over 150 individuals,” he said. (BBC)

Minister checks CWI as Oval not in games’ lineup

1

Minister of Sports Charles Griffith made a call to Dr Kishore Shallow, President of Cricket West Indies (CWI) seeking clarity on why Barbados has been left off the schedule for West Indies matches this year.

The two spoke yesterday as cricket lovers on the island continue to fume over the vexing matter, while CWI has repeated its promise that Barbados is still a preferred venue and will return to the roster.

“I had a conversation with President Shallow in relation to this. He indicated that over the last five years Barbados would have been heavily in the rotation, as far as the home series are concerned. From his perspective it was a situation of going to one or two other islands who were not privy to the schedule over those five years,” Griffith said.

“I know next year we will be having India coming to the Caribbean and we will be factored into that as well. The England women team will also be touring here next year as well, and Kensington Oval will be factored into that series. England (men) will be coming to the Caribbean in 2028, and part of that series will be at Kensington Oval as well.”
