RESIDENTS of Lascelles Terrace in The Pine, St Michael, got a scare yesterday just after 7 a.m. when a route taxi van ran off the road, crashed into a fence and ended up in a ditch just outside the home of Joyce Clarke.
No one was driving the vehicle.
Resident Kimberley Richards said that a woman who was passing told her of seeing the vehicle “coming down the road with no driver in it”.
Driver Reginald Taylor could not figure out how the van moved off on its own. He explained that he was driving the van with a load of passengers when it “just cut out”.
“So I just pushed it down in this road, park it, locked it and went for diesel and a fuse and when I came back I saw the van down in the ditch and onto a fence and I was only gone for about 20 minutes.”
Police officers, as well as a wrecker and a crane, arrived on the scene, where several curious onlookers gathered to get a glimpse of the van. Owner of the vehicle, Ronald Knight, also turned up and promised the owner of the damaged fence that it would be fixed. (RL)
