11 miles of stunts and thrills

WITH A COUNTDOWN and a shot from the starter’s gun, more than 500 people set off on an 11-mile journey yesterday as part of the NATION Fun Ride.
The ride, with its quirky designs, daring stunts and competitiveness, had been missing from the local sporting calendar for the past couple of years.
After the last rider had crossed the starting/finishing point in front of the Orange Mall, Warrens, St Michael, Simon Clarke was crowned the fastest racer, ending the race in half an hour to take the top Elite Category racer spot.
Some just wanted to take part. Children, accompanied by their parents/guardians; leisure riders and those simply feeling to prove to themselves they had what it took to finish were also spotted along the route.
In addition, several young riders took the opportunity to freestyle as the roads were mostly cleared.
Here, publisher and chief executive officer of Nation Publishing Co. Ltd Vivian-Anne Gittens is about to fire the starter’s gun to let the 500-plus cyclists loose on the road. Inset, this fearless young man got up high on his seat, executing a breathtaking stunt along the road. (CA)(Pictures by Nigel Browne.)
