The grass will never be greener on the other side of the boundary.
A source close to the renovation of Kensington Oval’s field has put its disrepair at the feet of the BCA, saying its ignorance of turf maintenance has directly led to the outfield being overrun by “goose grass”.
The criticism comes in response to comments made by Kensington Oval Management Inc. chief executive officer Ben Toppin’s earlier this week when he revealed the multimillion-dollar facility may not be able to host any of Barbados’ home matches due to the overrun of foreign grass.
“Over the past few years there have been a lot of discussions about the maintenance of sports fields in Barbados, but the problem with this discussion is that most of the people involved in these discussions do not know what it takes or the real cost to maintain one sport field,” said the source, who wished to remain anonymous.
“The problem at Kensington Oval is goose grass, which is known as man grass and not devil grass as was reported, but that field doesn’t seem to have been properly maintained for at least four months for it to reach a stage where the goose grass has grown seeds.
