WHEN A FIVE-YEAR-OLD Cecily Spencer first donned her robes for a Christmas church play, although she had no lines, she fell in love – with the stage.
Now over 50 years later, the theatre is so much a part of who she is that even a minor heart attack could not keep her down and away from the arts for long. In fact, she would be the first to tell you she was fortunate to have successfully turned a hobby into a career and spent her life doing what she loves, even if she now has to cut back somewhat on her many projects and responsibilities.
Performances at church for a young Cecily led to acrostics in primary school, the drama society at Foundation School, and later, to joining the Barbados Theatre Workshop performing and touring Guyana, Antigua, St Lucia.
In 1972 after Carifesta she joined Barbados Writers Workshop, performing primarily Barbadian written plays foremost by Tony Hinkson. Her memorable performance was Hinkson’s Teacher Teach’er. (Green Bananas Media)
