Drug rehab centre for women opens in August

VERDUN HOUSE drug treatment centre for men is about to get a sister.

Marina House, Barbados’ first drug rehabilitation centre for women, is on course to open its doors in Newcastle, St John, in August. The SUNDAY SUN witnessed intense work being done on the building, its perimeter and car park to meet this deadline.

The facility comes as increasing numbers of Barbadian women – from late teens to early 40s, several of whom are mothers – are seeking treatment for drug addiction.

Senior consultant psychiatrist at the Psychiatric Hospital, Dr Beresford Connell, said given the numbers involved, a residential option with a day care facility was needed, as not having one was stopping women from accessing treatment.
