THE EXTENSION OF Berth 5 at the Bridgetown Port will be completed by October 31 when two of the world’s mega cruise ships are booked to dock.
Giving an update yesterday on the progress of the work started in March, manager of operations at the Bridgetown Port Inc., Ian Stuart, said about 75 per cent of the work had been completed on what would be a 225-foot-long berth, costing about $50 million.
He pointed out, however, the longer facility would not only provide berthing accommodation for the large cruise ships, but also for cargo vessels.
Government has announced plans to build Sugar Point, a dedicated cruise facility adjacent to the port, but until this becomes a reality, the existing berthing facilities will continue to accommodate both cargo and pleasure ships.
