THERE ARE TOO many products on the island that are not exploited and farmers should not allow blackbelly sheep to fall victim to this habit.
This is according to the national coordinator for the small grants programme at the United Nations Development Programme David Bynoe. He was speaking at the launch of the Blackbelly Sheep Manual at the Barbados Agricultural Society’s (BAS) Beckles Road, St Michael headquarters yesterday.
“We have had many products which we have not exploited and we are not the ones reaping the benefits. There is a perception of an untapped market as far as the blackbelly sheep go, one which we are seeking to change. Therefore we need to capitalise on our indigenous assets and conserve our biodiversity as history has taught us that if we do not utilise it, someone else will,” he said.
Chief executive officer of the BAS, James Paul, said he believed proper use of the manual would make a difference in bringing better husbandry practices to the sector. (RA)
