SPECIAL CONSTABLES (SC) are required to go through the same enlistment procedures as civilians in order to become full-fledged police officers, a senior member of the force said yesterday.
Acting Deputy Commissioner Oral Williams set out the policy position when contacted by the SUNDAY SUN for a comment about the status of 34 special constables who have been on the job for at least ten years.
Pointing out that he did not know the exact number of SCs, neither did he have the files relating to the Special Constabulary, Williams said having basic qualifications and years of tenure were not enough to secure them positions as police officers.
“I cannot speak to some of them having degrees, but some of them have gone ahead and obtained the basic qualifications for entry into the force, but basic qualifications are not the only criteria used for people to enter the force,” he said.
