BARBADIAN Shamarh Brooks has been appointed captain of the West Indies ‘A’ for a series of three first-class matches in Sri Lanka next month.
Brooks will lead a 14-man squad that features the surprise selection of Jamaican fast bowler Reynard Leveridge.
The 26-year-old Leveridge has gained the nod despite not yet appearing in a first-class match or a regional limited-overs game.
The squad also includes experienced Barbadian fast bowler Kemar Roach who has found it difficult to force his way into the senior squad in recent times.
Brooks, 27, who has had the experience of captaining Barbados, has enjoyed a recent good run in the Professional Cricket League. When he came in for the final two-matches of the 2014-2015 season, he responded with two centuries and followed up with another hundred in the 2015-16 season in which he scored 534 runs at an average of 35.60.
The West Indies Cricket Board also announced a squad for three limited-overs matches that will follow the three-day games.
It will be captained by Trinidadian batsman Jason Mohammed and includes Barbadians Kyle Hope and Kyle Mayers, both first-time selectees to a West Indies ‘A’ squad.
The three-day matches will be played from October 4 to 21 with the limited-overs games from October 24 to 30. (HG)
