Police more aware of LGBTI issues

BARBADOS has climbed up another rung on the ladder regarding accepting members of the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender and Intersex (LGBTI) community.

Sixteen members of the Royal Barbados Police Force have just completed an awareness training of trainers course alongside representatives of organisations such as Community Education, Empowerment and Development; the Latin American and Caribbean Network of Transgender people; the Barbados Gays, Lesbians and All-Sexuals Against Discrimination; Empowerment, Quality, Unity, Acceptance, Love, Strength; and the Movement Against Discrimination Action Committee.

Coordinator Marlene Hewitt said training was necessary if Barbados was to keep its international commitments, and she felt heartened by the response.

“It went great. We were able to get all these officers out to participate. Most of them were open to the training and I am confident awareness has been raised, as some have said they now have a better understanding of the issues the LGBTI community faces,” she said. (CA)
