No deadbeat mums, says children’s champ

The notion that there are deadbeat mums in Barbados has been dismissed.

Rather, said Faith Marshall-Harris, whose focus is on advancing the interest of children, some mothers react to wantonly delinquent fathers by insisting they should not have access to the child.

“There are mothers that as far as I am concerned take the wrong things into consideration, but deadbeat, I have to reject that notion because the majority of our children as far as the latest statistics show have been raised traditionally by single female-headed households. They have really borne the brunt and have had the burden of care of children in this country for the majority of the population.”

Marshall-Harris, chair of the National Committee on the Rights of the Child, is however, reminding embattled parents that childhood is fleeting and long custody battles will leave the child’s life in a state of flux as sometimes they are not resolved while the child is a minor.

The attorney and child rights advocate took issue with the fledgling movement Men Against Naughty Dead Beat Mums Barbados with a Facebook following of more than 2 500 people. (AC)
