Play explores despair and hope

The Combermere School Hall was transformed into an atmosphere of hope for those who attended the production De Last Straw last weekend.

In a touching performance by the cast, the play’s several scenes depicted aspects of real life that could push you to the breaking point. In the end, hope is found in Jesus, who always comes through in any situation.

The cast, all members of World Transformational Centre Ministries under the leadership of Reverends Ronalston and Ruth-Ann Wiggins, gave a creditable performance in the almost two-hour production, that was well directed as well.

The plots centred on Mrs Williams, a married woman with a job, who feels like she is being pulled in 100 directions because of all her problems. Her husband Carlton loses his job and says nothing and their son Reuben is part of a group that robs and kills a man.

The show ran smoothly, evidence that a lot of effort and dedication went into it. There are powerful moments such as the scene where Mrs Williams seeks counselling with Dr Grace over her problems that now includes daughter Renee, whom she regards as a disappointment to the family and disowns her.

Dr Grace invites Renee to be part of the counselling session unknown to her mother, who cannot accept Renee’s lesbianism as a cry for her mother’s unrequited love.

In the end it was God’s intervention that resolved the matter. (RL)
