It’s time for the Errol Barrow Legacy 2.0.
That call has come from former High Commissioner to London, Reverend Guy Hewitt, as Barbadians this month mark the National Hero’s greatest legacy, Independence.
During an impassioned lunch-time lecture at the Democratic Labour Party’s (DLP) George Street headquarters yesterday, Hewitt said the Barrow legacy, which takes the spotlight during this the month of Independence celebrations, should not be used as a political football or for political expediency.
Hewitt said it was important to take a new look at the legacy of Barrow, who took this country into political Independence on November 30, 1966.
As he reflected on the DLP’s 30-0 thumping in the May 24 General Election, he suggested the legacy be modernised to fit into Barbados’ current socio-economic position to help take the country forward.
“If we are to honour his legacy, we need a new narrative,” Hewitt told the audience, which included the party’s political leader and president Verla De Peiza, and party stalwart Robert “Bobby” Morris, who was campaign manager for the General Election. (BA)
