Barbadian boxers found out just how tough the going will be at the Ronald Wilson Memorial Boxing Tournament, as all four local fighters lost their opening bouts on day 1 of the three-day tournament.
In the night’s featured fight, competing in the light-heavyweight division, one of Barbados’ brightest prospects, Adrian Biscette, was floored by the Cayman Islands’ Daniel Ebanks at the Queen’s Park Steel Shed on Thursday night.
Biscette entered the ring to a standing ovation from the small group of local supporters on hand, but those cheers quickly turned into deafening silence. After a series of exchanges, Ebanks’ powerful right hand connected with Biscette’s head, sending the fighter to the ground midway through the first round.
He managed to weather another barrage of jabs from Ebanks prior to the end of the first round, but Biscette’s mini comeback to start the second was short-lived, as another right hand sent him to the canvas once again.
Ebanks would send his opponent to the floor once more in this round, as the fight seemed to be headed for a premature end.
But Biscette staged another courageous comeback, before eventually losing 9-11 on the judges’ scorecards at the end of the three-round bout.
Earlier in the night Barbados’ Clinton Rogers was trailing 2-9 before he was disqualified in his light-welterweight bout against Grenada’s Timothy Stephen.
Fabion Best lost in the first round to Thomas McField-Brown from the Cayman Islands in a clash of middleweights and Guyana’s Ron Smith stopped Ronald Als in the second round in their open welterweight clash.
Fighters from St Maarten, St Vincent and the Grenadines and the US Virgin Islands are also scheduled to compete at the tournament.
