A historic church which survived the fury of a massive hurricane of 1831, fell victim to a major act of vandalism yesterday.
And now shocked officials at St Mary’s Anglican Church in The City are contemplating how they are going to find the money to replace 19 of the 34 original Georgian windows, including stained glass ones, that have been smashed.
“It is really sad that society is of such that people no longer respect the church,” retired senior superintendent of police and now church warden, Jeddar Robinson, told the DAILY NATION.
“Once upon a time we used to leave the gates open so that people could come in. But then the vagrants came in and dirtied the place; left the place so dirty that we now have to lock the gates,” he explained. (HLE)
