ST JOHN’S – West Indies were tottering on 157 for seven in their first innings at tea, replying to India’s first innings total of 566 for eight declared, on the third day of the first cricket Test at the Sir Vivian Richards Stadium here Saturday.
Captain Jason Holder is not out on nine, alongside wicket-keeper Shane Dowrich, who is six. Holder came to the crease after opener Kraigg Brathwaite was finally dismissed for 74 off 218 balls.
Resuming from 90 for three at lunch, the West Indies suffered a middle-order melt-down, losing four wickets for 67 runs in 28 overs.
Fast-medium seamer Mohammed Shami has been the main wrecker with four wickets for 41 runs in 17 overs.
He dismissed Marlon Samuels for just one and Jermaine Blackwood without scoring in the same over to start the Windies’ post-lunch woes.
Another seamer, Umesh Jadav, induced debutant Roston Chase to pull a short ball straight to India’s captain Virat Kohli at short mid-wicket after he had shaped fairly well in making 23 in 70 minutes at the crease.
Brathwaite, after battling away for 291 minutes and striking seven fours, was the seventh batsman out, gloving a lifting delivery from Yadav for wicket-keeper Wriddhiman Saha to claim his fifth dismissal.
Yadav has so far taken two for 26 in 14 overs. (EZS)
