THE NATIONAL UNION of Public Workers is accusing the current administration of attempting to privatise garbage collection in Barbados and said the Union will not be taking it lying down.
“There is a concern that [workers] are being deliberately starved for resources to put a case for privatisation. Also, our understanding is that there is a proposed pilot project spanning from Checker Hall in St Lucy to Rock Hall is St Philip which is intended, if successful, to be a precursor for a private entity taking over that assignment – again a move towards privatisation.
“This is enough, we have reached the time where, whatever is appropriate, we will be relentless in our endeavour to ensure sanitation is respected and get their due,” said acting deputy general secretary Wayne Walrond.
Walrond and industrial relations officer attached to the SSA Roger Gibson said the pilot project was currently using SSA trucks but they suspected this would change. (CA)
