Strike averted

STRIKE ACTION in Barbados is over and the 13 employees from the Barbados Investment and Development Corporation (BIDC) who were retired will be back on the job.

In addition, there will also be no need to go to the courts for a decision and the protocols for dismissing workers will be followed.

This was announced today in a joint media briefing by the National Union of Public Workers (NUPW) and the Barbados Workers Union (BWU) who are both claiming victory.

This offer has been made earlier during a meeting of the sub-committee of the social partners with Minister of Labour Senator Dr Esther Byer. At the time, the terms of the offer were not made public.

NUPW acting general secretary Roslyn Smith said they would now meet with the BIDC to start discussion on who would be going or staying; operating on the principal of “last in, first out”.

The unions have also asked that letters be withdrawn with respect to workers over age 60 at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital and those seeking to move the Customs and Excise Department under the Barbados Revenue Authority. (BN)
